Additive Manufacturing

Additive manufacturing can allow for smaller, more complex, and even uniquely customized parts that may help surgeons overcome hard-to-treat patient challenges. It even enables the production of previously impossible parts by allowing the creation of single components that would otherwise need to be comprised of several pieces. Our industry-leading additive manufacturing (ASTM F2792) capabilities include 3D modeling for medical devices and direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) to expedite prototyping.

The ability to create advanced structures and new surface topologies with direct metal laser sintering also has the potential to significantly improve product performance in unique ways. Additive manufacturing can enable the creation of unique and complex structures, including lattice structures ideal for orthopedic applications which may help promote bone growth and potentially shorten recovery times after surgery.

Electron Beam Welding

Deep weld process technology providing more options for complex precision orthopedic assemblies.

Electron beam welding is becoming the ideal manufacturing approach for many types of advanced orthopedic implants that meet surgical challenges by producing products with ultra-strong welds and high depth-to-width ratios.

  • Metal components are bonded via high velocity electrons which travel throughout the mating area, penetrating deep into the metal parts;
  • All welds are created in a vacuum chamber for ultra-low contamination;
  • Electron beams can be aimed with exceptional accuracy to weld even the smallest medical device components — with extremely high precision and strength.
  • The Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) of the electron beam weld is very small compared to conventional welding.
