microPEP Microwell Array

microPEP is pleased to announce the successful fabrication of its first in a series of "Microwell Array" products. Used mainly for biomedical assay applications such as DNA sequencing, the "microscope slide" holds a total of 42 million discrete wells that are 3 microns in size and depth. Each well is segregated and precision fabricated to accommodate individual assays in high speed, automated processes using the latest Medical bio-imaging fluorescent technology.

Dennis Jones, Manager of Engineering explained "This micro molding technology takes microPEP's micron engineering/production capability to a whole new level. The detail of the Array can only be clearly seen on a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and is even smaller than the micron level detail of imprinted digital CD's. Using microPEP's proprietary processing methods we injection mold identical near nano scale features across a macro sized optically clear thermoplastic surface with extreme positional accuracy".

Precision Engineered Products, LLC ("PEP") and Schaeffler Group, KG ("Schaeffler") announced today that a transaction was completed on October 31, 2008 whereby PEP acquired substantially all of the assets of Lacey Manufacturing, Inc. ("Lacey"). With operations located in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Lacey manufactures high quality, close tolerance metal and plastic molded components and assemblies for surgical and other precision applications. Lacey's sales for fiscal year 2008 are projected to be approximately $43 million USD.

Commenting on the acquisition, PEP's Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, Fredric Hammerle said ... "We are pleased to be adding Lacey and its talented staff of 275 associates to our existing portfolio of complementary businesses at a time many companies are not expanding due to the unprecedented meltdown in the global credit markets and the weakening economy in general. matrix, incorporated, One Catamore Boulevard, East Providence, RI, a wholly owned subsidiary of Precision Engineered Products with headquarters in Attleboro, MA has recently taken delivery of a Precitech 2400 diamond turning two axis ultra precision contouring machine. “We’ve relied on the marketplace to supply our optically-turned components and it has been a delivery blind spot for us. With this purchase, we are taking firm control of the front end of the business,” said John Harker, President. This equipment will allow the company to precisely cut optical surfaces in both thermoplastic and non-ferrous metal optical inserts to a sub-micron capability. Matrix continues to build capability in the delivery of micro-sized/micron tolerance optical components.

“This equipment completes the technical triangle of recently acquired optical capability upgrades including the addition of Zemax-EE optical design software and a FISBA interferometer with aspheric lens measurement capability,” said Dennis Jones, Engineering Manager.

The TS 16949:2002 Quality Standard, which has world-wide acceptance by such OEMs as BMW, Daimler-Chrysler, Fiat, Ford and GM, now makes it possible to comply with one technical specification yet supply multiple OEMs. This has significant benefit to both suppliers and manufacturers by way of reducing customer requirements for Supplier Quality Assurance (SQA) staff and repetitive customer audits. This state-of-the-art system will allow sales engineers to provide full-scale models from customer-provided data files in a matter of days. The system also provides the means to increase the scale for micro-sized components so as to facilitate fit and function assessment. "Acquiring the FDM technology takes Matrix to the next level of 3-D CAD design and prototyping capability. The equipment takes a computer CAD design and turns it into a real 3-D model within a day of developing the .stl file. Precision Engineered Products, llc, and its electrical contacts and precision metal stampings subsidiary, Brainin, are pleased to announce the acquisition of Patton MacGuyer, Inc. Patton MacGuyer, located in Providence, Rhode Island and founded in 1917, is a high quality manufacturer of specialty metal stampings including terminals, pin connectors, heaters, precision stampings, specialized wire termination and terminal insertion equipment and tooling.

The Patton MacGuyer (PM) business and assets will be relocated to and integrated with Brainin's world class stamping facilities in Attleboro, Massachusetts. The majority of current PM employees will be moving with the business. Brainin has been in continuous operation since 1939, and at its present Massachusetts facility since 1986.

Brainin announces the addition of a dedicated medical parts production cell to its Attleboro, MA facility. The cell includes self-contained stamping, multi-station ultrasonic cleaning and rinsing, oven drying and packaging. The entire process occurs in a controlled setting where parts and material are never exposed to a typical manufacturing environment. Tantalum parts in sizes as challenging as .014” in diameter x .012” thick are currently being fabricated. Stainless steel, other base metals and precious metals including platinum, palladium, gold and silver are all currently being manufactured by Brainin.
